I recently started this new painting called Primavera. It is the fourth painting in a series
that I have been working on for a few months. They are all large scale paintings.
In this series I have been exploring themes of freedom and flight. Each painting has
a suggestion of outstretched wings and has a feeling of expansion and exuberance.
In this painting I am playing with colors that epitomize spring for me…..greens and lavenders and purples.
As an expressionist painter I never know what the painting is going to look like before I
start. The painting is the PROCESS and it unfolds over time. Sometimes the process
is quick and sometimes it takes months and months. Each painting is a unique adventure and exploration. I come to it fresh every day and let it speak to me . I listen
for guidance and am guided by my body and my eyes. I often meditate before I start
and ask to be an open vessel for creative ideas and insights to flow through me.

This painting is still in its early stages. I began on the floor as you can see in some of the images. Usually the painting goes back and forth from the floor to the wall and back
again. I have also added a few details and upclose shots of the painting.

His intention was to interview me in my studio as well as to shoot some video of me working on a painting. Eric has been working for a few years as an editor and wanted to start working on his own projects. I said i would be delighted to do this project with him. Eric came over to my studio about four times during the process. He came initially and took alot of shots in the studio itself. I had been thinking about a new painting I had been wanting to start and thought it would be perfect for this project. I already had three paintings in a series and wanted to start a fourth one. Generally when I start a painting I don’t really have a clear sense of where it is going to go… or any idea what the end product is going to look like. I just was feeling RED…. and that I wanted the painting to have a lot of movement and that I wanted somehow to incorporate the image of ”wide spread wings” and a sense of freedom… both of which had been present in the other three paintings. So I spread out a large blank canvas on the floor of my studio, poured the paint out onto paper plates (a different color onto each plate) and we began.
The painting seemed to happen very easily and effortlessly. After our first session Eric
said he wanted to come back and shoot some video of my face and hands to incorporate into the footage he had already taken. He also had some other very specific ideas that he wanted to
work on to incorporate into the piece.

Then Eric disappeared into his editing process… and a few weeks later emerged with the video….which is now posted on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUCpZNn7Q3Y

I think he did an absolutely stunning job. The video itself is a work of art. I hope you will take a look and let me know what you think. What are your favorite parts? What spoke to you the most? Is there
anything you wish there was more of? If there was a sequel what would it be? I would welcome
your comments.

After our initial sessions i worked on the painting a few more times
and have included an image of it in its final form.

I am happy to inform you that six of my large scale expressionist paintings are being featured in Dennis Hopper’s home in Venice, California. This avant garde architectural masterpiece was designed by Frank Gehry and Brian Murphy and is now for sale.

The house was modeled after Frank Gehry’s own home in Santa Monica and has a corrugated-iron exterior, a split-level dramatic interior and beautifully reflects the artistic sensibility that Hopper embodied. Dennis Hopper was an accomplished artist and a passionate art collector and I feel honored to be showing my work in his home. I am excited to share with you that my art has been beautifully photographed at the Dennis Hopper house.
